The UFO in the middle of Beijing

The Beijing opera is a spectacular, futuristic glass palace symbolising the aesthetic preferences of the new Chinese architecture: Impressive size and illusionism at first sight.

A concert hall and two theatres are located behind the oval façade. The opera house designed by the French architect Paul Andreu in 2001, opened on 25th September 2007. The venue for national and international theatre, opera, music and dance performances was built on an area of 180,000 m2.

At its base, the shell-shaped roof with the 6,000 square meter glass façade has a width of about 100 metres. The glass element of the façade pushes between the two titanium covered elements which creates the impression of an opening theatre curtain. The visual impression is even strengthened by the surrounding water, which perfectly reflects the glass façade and leaves a new impression at the different times of a day.

The visitor enters the building via a subterranean passage running underneath an artificial lake. The interior is a gigantic marketplace with streets, plazas, malls, restaurants and parks. The opera house is located in the middle, flanked by the concert hall and the theatre.

The new landmark of the Chinese capital, called “egg” by the Beijing residents, is located in the heart of Beijing, only 500 meters away from the Tian An Men Place and the Forbidden City.

The climatic conditions in Beijing with cold, dry winters with continuous temperatures of -5 °C and humid, hot summers with temperatures up to 25 °C were a great challenge for this modern interpretation of building architecture.The combined Oventrop surface heating and cooling “Cofloor” provides ideal room temperatures in the building complex throughout the year.

The surface heating, and to an increasing extent the surface cooling, are becoming more and more important when choosing the heating/cooling system for complex new buildings and for renovation projects. Comfort temperatures cannot only be achieved economically during heating periods but also during periods of alternate heating and cooling. Contrary to radiators, considerably larger surfaces are used for the temperature control of a room. This way, the flow temperature of the heating and cooling water does not differ that much from the room temperature (during heating periods approx. 35 °C instead of 70 °C and during cooling periods not below 16 °C).

This allows for an environmentally friendly combination of modern heating or cooling generators, such as heat pumps with additional cooling function. A further energy saving is made as temperatures can be reduced from the normal 22 °C to 20 °C without compromising the “comfort” feeling.

Moreover, surface heating stirs up less dust than radiator systems and dry floors prevent the build-up of germs, mites and fungus, which can cause allergies.
