Strasbourg – Seat of the European Parliament

The futuristic glass palace of the European Parliament rises at the banks of the river Ill and the Rhine-Marne channel. 785 Members of the European Parliament discuss in the plenary assembly hall of the building, which was named after the French forward thinker Louise Weiss who lived in the last century.

The building, which was constructed according to the plans of the French architectural office Architecture-Studio located in Paris, consists of three elements: the elliptical Parliament wing, a round tower and an agora, a central meeting place from Greek antiquity, which is located between these two elements. According to the planners of the building, the architecture shall demonstrate a “system of open relationship following the example of a steadily developing united democracy”.

1,133 offices on seventeen floors are accommodated in the 60 m high tower made of glass and sandstone. The tower with its seemingly unfinished Eastern façade symbolizes a steadily developing Europe. The conferences rooms are accommodated in the arch-shaped Parliament wing with its glass façade. This building was structured around three internal roads, the main road of which was designed like a winter garden with a philodendron forest.

The “Dôme", a wooden plenary assembly hall in which the Members of the European Parliament meet, is the heart of the central arch. The impressive glass façade covering a surface of 13,000 square meters shall symbolize the democratic transparency of the European Union. The plenary assembly hall is the largest in Europe.

A complex heating and cooling system with Oventrop valves generates a comfortable room climate In the endless offices and assembly halls.

Oventrop double regulating and commissioning valves “Hydrocontrol VTR and VFC” were installed in the supply pipes of the air conditioning appliances and serve to achieve a hydronic balance between the different sections of the system.

The presetting with memory lock allows for a time-saving and comfortable realization of hydronic balancing. The required presetting values, which can be read off directly, are infinitely adjustable. The required flow rate can be determined with the help of the measuring system “OV-DMC 3”. The measuring gauge is connected to the double regulating valves via the pressure test points. The valves can be installed in either the supply or the return pipe.
