Hydronic balancing of cooling systems

Consuming points in a cooling system which are far away from the pump are not supplied with enough water without hydronic balancing. Others, however, which are close to the pump are oversupplied. This does not only cost valuable energy and increases costs, but also influences the comfort.

Hydronic balancing is understood to mean an optimum water distribution in the system, e. g. the required volume flow to the radiator is guaranteed through presettable valves (PICV).  With the help of the hydronic balancing all components, such as radiators, regulating valves, balancing valves, pumps and pipes are co-ordinated and balanced.

Hydronically balanced cooling systems work energy-efficiently and offer good comfort.

The planning fundamentals such as supply and return temperature, volume flow and differential pressure can actually be maintained in operating condition. The high-efficiency pump works efficiently.  Almost constant return temperatures ensure that the cooling unit works optimally. The cooling capacity arrives where it is needed. There neither is an oversupply nor an undersupply.

Thus, misadjustments such as

  • decrease of the supply temperature
  • too high volume flows and as a result wrong return temperature
  • undersupply of hydronically unfavourably arranged consuming points
  • oversizing or wrong setting of the circulation pump

are avoided.

As the investment costs are low compared to other measures such as the refurbishment of the building cover, there is a very good benefit/cost ratio.

Without hydronic balancing

  • unnecessary high energy consumption
  • overheated or undercooled rooms
  • bad efficiency of the cooling unit
  • flow noises at the valves
  • oversizing or wrong setting of the circulation pump

With hydronic balancing

  • saving of energy
  • optimum room temperatures
  • good system efficiency (optimized efficiency of the cooling unit)
  • no flow noises
  • ideal controllability of the system
